Nepal, the government controls the former Maoist guerrillas
Maoist chief Prachanda has entrusted his former guerrillas to a government committee with a decision that is defined by the local press a''milestone''for peace in Nepal. The rebel leader, whose real name 'Pusha Kamal Dahal, and interim Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today signed an agreement that provides for the transfer of control of about 19 000 former fighters of the PLA (Army of Liberation people) in a cross-party committee chaired by the Prime Minister and that the purpose of promoting the integration of the militants in the ranks of the army. According to estimates, about 16 000 people died in ten years of bloody civil conflict. Since last June, the former Himalayan kingdom has no more 'government after the resignation of Nepal (which now carries out functions temporary) ordered by the Maoists that 40% of the seats are the most' strong in Parliament. Since then the major parties failed to reach an agreement to elect a new head of government. Yesterday the president Ram Baran Yadav has extended a previous deadline of five days that the parties had agreed last week to form a unity government 'national in order to overcome the political deadlock that has suspended for six months the process of democratic transition.
